So you think you know Killiney Golf Club!
We’re not too sure about that. Check your knowledge by having a go at the quiz below.
It was devised by Ronnie Kane, Alistair Smith and Peter Bennett, in consultation with KGC Quizmaster extraordinare Ivan Cruise and our resident historian and document sleuth Gordon Horsfield.
The prize is a case of wine (12 bottles) sponsored by Ronnie and Peter. If you submit an entry showing a credible effort, your name will be entered into the draw for the case of wine. So please, have a go.
It's an absolute certainty you won't know the answers to many of the questions off the top of your head. You might get one or two, but that’s about it. You’ll have to do a bit of research and dig around for the answers. And it could take a few hours. That’s part of fun, and hopefully you'll enjoy the journey. In the process you’ll learn some amazing things about our club.
The answers are on the website. You just have to find them. Your first port of call is the Photo Archive, which is a repository of the history of the club, and much more. It contains a search tool. If you type a word into the search box, and it finds a match, it will pop up the information. It’s up to you to select what’s relevant.
Click here if you've any difficulty locating the Photo Archive.

J L Sterling was captain in 1906 and 1911. He presented a magnificent trophy to the club in 1911 for the Captain's Prize. The same year, the trophy disappeared. It was lost or mislaid. It was discovered in 2006, approximately 90 years after it disappeared. It was a chance discovery. (a) Where was it found? (b) Who found it? (The Tiebreaker Question No. 22 is also on this subject). Our Course Superintendent Michael Browne is not an excitable individual. He's cool, calm and relaxed. Except on one occasion. He was on the course during a strong wind, and spotted a stationary UFO (Unidentified Flying Object) or flying saucer hovering over the course. The thing was stationary. He took a photograph. What exactly was he looking at? (Hint: If you say "a cloud", you’ll get no marks. We need a much more specific answer.) Points: 1 |

Tiebreaker Question Just in case! In question No.15 we ask for information about the lost J L Sterling Trophy. It was found some 90 years later. In No.15 we want to know who found it, and where it was found. As a tiebreaker, we want to know much it cost to get it back? (Hint: The information is not divulged on the website. So save yourself the trouble of looking. You'll have to guess. We'll allocate marks for the closest number to the correct answer. Any figure between €1 and €10,000 is acceptable. So take your pick). |
