Dear Members,
In 2015 (re)Golf was appointed to undertake a Master Plan of the Killiney Golf Course. While many worthwhile projects had been undertaken on the Course prior to this, it was believed that we should have an overall plan going forward for the entire Course rather than just undertaking a series of single projects. A copy of the Master Plan dated September 2015 is attached.
Since 2015, significant improvements have been made to the Course in accordance with the Masterplan and in particular to the greens and bunkers. A water storage facility has been constructed which is environmentally friendly and stores surface water from the course and the Clubhouse which is used to water the greens during periods of dry spells. In addition, the Practice Area has been upgraded in accordance with the Plan, and is now a much-used facility since it re-opened.
The work undertaken on the Masterplan to date has been prioritised following consultation with the Course Development Committee. As development work on the course is disruptive and costly, the execution of the various projects is of course constrained by minimising disruption to the course and subject to budgetary constraint.
A bar chart showing the projects undertaken to date and those planned for the period 2022- 2027 can be viewed below. You will note that the next project to be executed in 2022 is the improvement of the 7/16th green and the 8th and 17th teeing areas which are small and subject to damage from tree roots. This general area is congested and the subject to wear and tear from golf traffic movement. This project will be followed by improvements to the 6/15th green in 2023.
Like any plan, it has been and will be subject to some minor adjustment from time to time, taking account of development in the design of golf courses generally and conditions encountered during the execution of the various projects.
There are many other improvements being made to the course on an on-going basis which are not included in the Masterplan yet are essential to the enhancing the appearance of the Course and adding to the enjoyment of the playing experience. In this regard, I would like to acknowledge the outstanding work that has been undertaken by the Gardening Committee under the guiding hand of Charlie Barry with his small band of volunteers.
Further reports and updates on the Course will be provided to members during the year.
