A lot has happened since my last log in March, I hope you find this update interesting and informative.
Scoring Committee
Keith Bardon, with the able assistance of Peter Bardon has been carrying out this function for Men’s Golf for many years, and in more recent years Brendan Barrett & Paddy May were drafted in, I want to thank them all on behalf of everyone and I am delighted to announce that they will now be supported by a new crew who are, or will be trained in over the coming weeks. Thanks to everyone who volunteered.
Entrance Gate & Bathroom Facilities
Over the next month we will be fitting a locking device and security camera to the gate from the Car Park beside the cleaning area. A key pad will be installed to gain access. More details will be announced nearer the time. After many requests a bathroom facility for Members will be provided half way up the 3rd/12th fairway on the right hand side. This should come as a great relief to a lot of Members.
Plummers ( for 18+ handicaps )
Plummers' time sheets are full everyweek. Plummers that can play earlier on Monday are encouraged to do so. Paddy McMahon organised their first away day to Woodenbridge which attracted over 30 players. I was sorry to miss this great days golf, after which they returned to Killiney to dine. This added greatly to the social atmosphere in the Club on the Tuesday of Radisson Week. Well done to Paddy, Peadar Nolan & Brendan Conway. Keep up the good work.
Tuesday Fourball Invitation
The Tuesday Fourball Committee are having a fantastic season, besides having huge numbers turning up every Tuesday. The most recent Super Tuesday had 84 players with guests from 28 other clubs. It was a great night. The Super Tuesday is held on the last Tuesday of every month throughout the Summer. This, or in fact any Tuesday, is a hassle free way to invite those people you owe one to, Great Golf, hopefully, Great Food, assured, and Great Prizes, for the lucky ones, and now smart casual dress, no more jackets, so no more excuses. My sincere thanks to the Committee headed by David McNamara, Karl Unger and Alan Dooley. They really do put their hearts and souls into running this competition.
Matches
A gentle reminder that the first rounds of the following internal Club Matches have to be completed by June 30th.
Glenageary Cup, Molloy Cup, Seniors & Springsomes.
It’s up to the names on the top of the draw to arrange matches, so don’t leave it too late.
Teams
June is a busy month for our Team Golfers with the following Matches organised:
Junior Cup on the 10th, Old Conna Seniors the 15th, Jimmy Bruen the 17th, Powerscourt Cup the 18th and Senior Cup on the 24th & 25th June. Please come out and support your fellow Members. Further details on our Web.
Invitation Week
The afternoon time sheets for this popular week are full but there are still some morning slots. George O'Connell has kindly offer to sponsor a prize each day for nearest the pin. Vincent Finnegan is doing likewise for longest drive. My sincere thanks to both of them and for Tony Harbison’s Assitec for stepping in to sponsor the Friday Men’s Fourball. I will be writing to all our sponsors to acknowledge their generous support for our Invitation Week. I would urge you to support their Companies, remember every little helps.
Score Cards, Sandbags Tea & Coffee
New Score Cards have been printed and I am organising a supply to be left in the Men’s Locker Room beside the monitor for all you early risers. Good news for caffeine addicts as a Tea & Coffee Machine has been installed in the Pro Shop, well done Leo.
If you have a sandbag or two travelling around in your boot please return them as we are running short.
Foxrock Trophy
Our Saturday April the 1st Competition saw the winners and runners up qualify for the Foxrock Trophy ( originally The McInerney Scotch Foursomes) which is being held in Foxrock Golf Club from the 16th to the 21st of July. Last years beaten finalists from Killiney, Brian McCarthy and Michael Boyce have been invited back, also representing Killiney will be: Myself with Brendan McAndrew, & Sean Hayes with Mark O Connell. Lets hope we go further and one of us wins it this year.
1st Tee
During the recent course works an electrical cable was run to the Cabin on the 1st Tee and we are now going to install uplighters to light up the 1st Tee Box which will add greatly to the view from the Club House during the dark evenings.
Course Photos
Peter Bennett and I have been given the green light to update the photographs of the holes on the course. The current ones are over 10 years old and will be kept on the website in an historical section.
Lockers in Basement
There is at present a demo locker on display beside the smoking area. A limited amount of these lockers will be available at a cost of €100 per year. They will be installed in the basement along with cages to leave your caddy carts. There will be no facility for charging your batteries, nor will it be permitted. Please contact Mags to reserve one.
Dress Code
In keeping with the times and in common with our neighbouring Clubs a more relaxed dress code has been introduced. Niall is due to send out a notice about this shortly.
Connacht Seniors Trophy
You cannot keep a good man down, I am delighted that Nigel Duke, has just won the Connacht Seniors Trophy for the third time. On behalf of every Member well done Nigel.
Course Development Committee
The CDC will be chaired by Graham Molloy, and the Committee will comprise of, The Captain + Lady Captain, Paddy May, George O Connell, Emer Kirwan, Michael Brown with Niall Keyes in attendance. Another Lady Member will be added shortly.
Invitation Mixed Matchplay sponsored by Radisson blu
It all started in 1970, but this week just gets better and better under the direction of Brenda Sheehan. Having helped Brenda over the years, I know just how much hard work and hours she puts into organising the week. I want to sincerely thank her for all she does to make it such a success. It would truly be remiss of me if I did not also thank our Lady Captain Aisling for guiding me through the six matches to reach the final. Sadly we were beated on the 17th , but in the words of a previous Captain, “we had a ball”. Radisson Blu have confirmed that they are returning again next year, once more I ask you all to support Radisson Blu St. Helens Hotel whenever you can. While other Clubs can no longer organise this type of Competition, either from lack of entries or sponsorship, or both, it’s incredible to think that next year we, in Killiney, will be doing it for 48 years.
Pierce Purcell Shield
The GUI have kindly invited me to present the Leinster Section winning pennant in Callan in July and the overall winners with the Sheild in Carton House in September.
Have A Great Summer & Enjoy Your Golf.
