Blitz Nights Early 2019

It started to get a bit cooler in early February and the temperature can be judged very accurately by the amount of layers that Willow and our President Michael arrive to the club in after their Arctic trek from Flower Grove – very similar in fact to the legendary trail between Kangerlussuaq and Sisimiut but not quite that far.

For some members, including myself, Thursdays have become the highlight of our social week. To meet a friendly face, share a paraprosdokian or two and perhaps sip a glass of Musigny (Grand cru of course) while catching up with the latest golf leader boards in distant lands. Come on up on a Thursday for the Blitz night and give it a whirl – and remember the ability to actual play snooker has no advantage towards having a good time or winning the prizes.

Willow Murray and Michael Thunder in the early Blitz days.

Remember snooker is one of the few sports where the best bits are the breaks.

Last week the pairings were fantastic – Ivan Cruise and Des FitzGerald – a formidable combination always capable of that big score. Des has a history of great sporting achievements from Football, golf, and tennis. Ivan has a history – best left deep in the Garda files.

It was all talk of the Oscars coming up – would our Tony Jenkins pick up the Oscar for Best Cameo role for his memorable performance in Goodfellows II. Alas, it was not to be but best of luck to Ivan who has auditioned for the hump in a remake of Quasimodo. Only messing - I made that bit up.

Disclaimer - This report is not based on fact but more on rumour and innuendo and any likeness to any living person is purely accidental.

The Killiney Snooker Singles Competition is well under way with a record 48 players at the off. At this stage we have lost some of the bookies favourites – Jim Byrne out, John F. Burke out, Naoise Kelly out, Gordon Horsfield out, Brian Carroll out – but best of luck to those still with a chance for the coveted trophy. Still competing are Dermot McCarthy, Denis Houton, Peter Wyse, Barry MacManus, Ivan Cruise and George O’Connell to name a few and don’t forget Harry Lawlor – twice champion and looking for that elusive third.

The excitement of last week's final was too much for some.

The winner this week was everybody as we had a great night but taking home the excellent and the very impressive Case of Château Margaux was Richard Cullen and the inimitable Maurice McCudden.

Actually, I lied about the Chateau Margaux – it may have been ‘Chateau Maggot’ a slippery little number from Lidl – but these are merely details on a great night.

That’s it for now guys – hope to see you some Thursday!
