A gallant group of "up-and-coming" 18+ Killiney-ites met their match in Newlands on Friday 17 May in the Best Cup! Expectations were running high after a famous victory over Corballis Links in the previous round.  

In the Home matches, Derek Ryan and Fergal McEvatt had a splendid 5 and 4 victory, while Brendan Conway and Fionan Breathnach came from 5 down on 12th to all-square on 17th - only to lose on 18th...!! 

Away in Newlands, it was a different story, with the home team swiping Killiney's proud moniker of "Clean Sweep" team (though Gavin Carpenter and Leigh Dolan are adamant that they would have turned a 2 hole deficit on 14th around if allowed to continue..!). Kieran Killeen and Ronan King met formidable competition (inc. Newlands current President and Best Cup veteran), while rookies Barry Timlin and Enda Allen fought bravely against their star performer who made a habit on chipping in out of bunkers!  

So we lose out on a place in the quarter-final. But the tie was played in wonderful Best Cup tradition, with great credit to all who did Killiney proud. They do say that the team that stays together, slays together. We now have a panel of 27 talented high handicappers focused on winning the 2020 Best Cup...!!! Well done to all, and in particular to the management team - Brendan Conway, Kieran Killeen, Alan Dooley and Ronan King (not forgetting "wee Jimmy" Matt Campbell!)
