A few days ago I wrote a piece about research being carried out by Paraic Lavelle on coast guard stations. He's still unearthing all sorts of interesting historic information about to our club. Here's one of the more interesting pieces he's dug up. A job advertisement for a greenskeeper, published in The Scotsman on 19 Aug 1904. The club was founded in 1903, so the lucky candidate must have been the first greenskeeper. At £1 per week. Makes you think.
Greenkeeper (good) wanted, who can coach and mend clubs; wages £1 per week, with free house, coals and light; sale of balls and coaching fees; over 360 members; inland links. Apply to the Hon. Secy., Killiney Golf Club, Killiney, Co. Dublin, Ireland, stating age, married or single.
Thank you Paraic.
