July 2016

Gentlemen,

It’s the beginning of July, I am over halfway through the year of my captain’s adventure and I do hope you are all having as good a time as I am. Thank you for all your support.

Now just to keep you up to date on what’s going on.

Pierce Purcell - We hosted the qualifying round of the Pierce Purcell and came out with the top spot. Killiney team then defeated Rathfarnham 4-1 in the regional qualifier but unfortunately lost to Kilcoole in the next round in Woodbrook.

Killiney Invitation Mixed Matchplay event sponsored by Radisson Blu St. Helen’s Hotel was a fantastic success. The weather was perfect and the competition was strong. By the end of a great week the icing on the cake was a Killiney winner. Larry and Lady Vice-Captain Aisling Sherin were well deserved winners. We all danced the night away.

Tuesday Invitational - Our committee of David McNamara, Karl Unger and Alan Dooley have been doing very well including two more Super Tuesdays and an invitation Tuesday sponsored by Standard Life. (Thanks to Paul Smith and Denis Houton).

The Challenge Cup – our premier singles Matchplay event was a great week culminating in a two great semi-finals on the Thursday and the final on the Friday. Kindly sponsored by Keith Bardon of Footjoy/Titleist. Our Reigning Champion Tom Wallace (Recent recipient of his first hole-in-one) took the eventual winner Brian McCarthy to the 21st hole in his semi-final But Brian McCarthy, a recent new member, played well all week and just pipped Conrad Lyons in the final.

President’s Prize – Was won by Paddy McMahon and Junior Captain Michael Wylde (4) had a Gross 74.
Invitation week – lessons learned maybe for next year but we roll on. The events have been well supported and great evenings followed each of them. Next one sponsored by Merrion Stockbrokers on Friday 22nd July.

New Members - There are more interviews next week for potential new members – if successful that will bring the total this year to 24.

CDC (Course Development Committee) continues to consider the long term maintenance of the course and we can see the benefit of the recent tree management.  The main focus for next winter is irrigation and drainage and we look forward to hearing more in the next few months.

The Junior boys section under 15 team of Freddy Allen, James Baily, Matthew Bardon and Oscar Sexton got off to a winning start in their quest for the Elm Park Trophy by winning their first round match played at Woodbrook. We wish them well.

Snooker as you know is close to my heart and this year’s singles trophy came to a thrilling finale. Willow ‘Williwaw’ Murray competed against Harry ‘The Hurricane’ Lawlor as they  played for a place in history and a new name on the board – Harry wins by the slimmest of margins – Black ball in the third. Well done Harry.

We are also holding our Snooker Golf Day on Friday 5th August. This is for everyone – not just for snooker players. Take a line, muster up a few friends and come along. Golf, fantastic food, fantastic prizes (no snooker) and everyone goes home with a bottle of wine – where would you get it. Open for entries on-line now.

That’s it for now,

Yours in Golf,

Gordon Horsfield
