Killiney News Letter April 2016

Gentlemen,

It’s the end of April already, although no hints yet from the weather.

I do hope you are getting out as much as you can and enjoy playing the course as every week the greens get a smidgen faster and the drives achieve an extra few yards.

Just to keep you up to date on what’s going on.

  • Work on the course continues, some trees have already been felled. The large trees left of the 9th fairway were originally not all planned to be cut down but when the two were removed the others were deemed a health and safety issue and after much discussion unfortunately they had to follow.
  • The reconstructed bunker on the left of the third green has taken no time to knit and I am told it should be in play in a few weeks.
  • The Tuesday 4ball is going from strength to strength with a great turnout last Tuesday for our first Super Tuesday of the year. Prizes kindly sponsored by Ken McCullagh, Conrad Lyons and (new Dad) Brian Carroll. Well done to our Tuesday’s committee headed by David McNamara, Karl Unger and Ivor Vard. Alan Dooley has recently joined the team.
  • Radisson Blu St. Helen’s Hotel is our new sponsor for the Killiney Invitation Mixed week and we are progressing well in the organisation of this major week in Killiney’s diary. The Tournament starts on Sunday 15th May and runs all week. The Gala dinner is on Friday May20th
  • We have 22 new full members this year so far with some further applications received.
  • The Roger Farrell day was a great success and the evening was even better. The staff donated their time and our Chef de Cuisine Mark Clarke, a long-time friend of Roger, donated the entire meal. It was great to see some ‘old hands’ return to help out. It showed the appreciation of Roger and I personally felt proud to a member of our club. With donations still coming in we are near to €16k. Well done everyone.
  • The Captains’ Drive-In is somewhere in my distant past now but thank you all for your support and for not talking too much about the drive itself.
  • The Junior Drive-in was last Sunday and Captains Michael Wylde and Emma Savage showed me how it should be done. Great drives guys. Well done to Roisin McCarron and her committee (Keith Bardon, Julie Savage, Mieke McNamara, Jim Byrne and Brendan Seaver) for a really great day. Keith Bardon as Titleist sponsored the prizes and we thank him for that.

Not to ramble on too much but don’t forget the Radisson Blu St. Helen’s Hotel Mixed Matchplay starts on May 15th!

Also we are hosting the Pierce Purcell Shield on Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th June and we will be looking for some volunteers to help on the days.

Yours in Golf,
Gordon Horsfield, Captain
