Gentlemen,
We are well into October and I feel my captaincy is slipping away. I cannot believe my year is nearly over - each time I do something these days somebody says “Well that’s the last time you’ll have to do that”. I will miss all of it – the good and the difficult.
Now just to keep you up to date on what’s going on.
- Captain’s Day – Well I certainly made history this year by having two. It was very unfortunate that the fog settled so densely but it did make the decision an easy one, on safety grounds, to postpone the fixture. I felt sorry for those who could not attend the second day but it did give an opportunity to many others. In true Killiney fashion we went ahead with the dinner and Ivan’s entertainment for the evening. A memorable night that I will cherish for many years. Thanks you for all your support. Conrad Lyons was an admirable winner on the day with a great score of 64.
- Captain’s Plate – Was won by Conor Sherin and could theoretically have won the Captain’s prize as well – now that would have been history making. Well done Conor.
- Autumn Leaves - This was a great day although challenging weather conditions and in Killiney fashion we made an excellent evening of it and everybody had a good time.
- Tuesday Invitational - Our committee of David McNamara, Karl Unger and Alan Dooley have been excelling themselves and there is a great buzz about Tuesdays again. Well done team.
- Visiting Captain’s Days – These are great days when your captain is pampered by local clubs and I will miss these probably more than anything.
- Condition of course – Graham Molloy, Michael Brown and the team deserve much praise for a huge effort made around my Captain’s day and the course is in excellent condition. Placing is in now and we will let the fairway grow a little for its own protection.
- Ready golf –We have introduced ‘Ready’ golf and it is very noticeable that we can reduce the time of a round if the will is there. Remember it is not just on the tee box but whenever you are ready and it is safe – hit away.
- Ladies Section - Following a request, the Management Committee has agreed to reserve two lines after Saturday Men's Golf for the Ladies Section up until the end of December 2016.
- Snooker Blitz and singles – The snooker Blitz has started again – Thursdays for 8.00pm - Sharp – the ability to play snooker is of no advantage as the handicap system is rigged so everyone has a fair chance of bringing home the spoils and we will have you home before eleven. The singles competition for 2016 has the sheet up. Please put your name down and thank you for the support.
- Prize donations – The list for 2017 competition prizes is up in the changing room. On behalf of the Vice-Captain and myself your generosity for this ongoing tradition in Killiney is really appreciated. Thank you.
That’s it for now.
Yours in Golf,
Gordon Horsfield
